After a very wet game 1, the rains let up and the Mavs and Hornets took the field. Once again, the Hornets were made up of many subs from around the league and even wore the Knights jumpers in order to keep the last drops of last year’s Grand Final from washing out of theirs.
The first quarter was a close one. Back and forth, goals were kicked. Richard Gates showed off some serious foot skills in the forward line for the Hornets, putting a couple through the tall posts. But the Dragus-coached Mavs responded with stealing Joshie from his babysitter on the sideline, forcing him into a Mavs jumper, and watching him take over from the half-backline. And the end of one it was Hornets by just 5 points.
The second and third quarters went by like a blur, as umpire Manly decided that halftime was basically optional. As in the first, the pressure was hot and the leads changed hands many times. The Mavs super sub Jake Ryan was able to find Governor Corgas in the forward line a few times, giving the man they call Corgs his biggest thrill since the Christmas Tree debacle of 2015. On the other side, Marshy and Bushy had enough leather for the entire cast of 50 Shades of Grey and kept the game tight. After 3, the Mavs trailed 44-41.
The tired legs of the Hornets subs finally caught up to them in the 4th quarter. While Fab and Tony were able to hold down the backline for the most part, Revo Mav Ace controlled the Hornets half forward line as if it was a group of Lady Suns. He took contested mark after contested mark, keeping the Hornets far from goal and securing the win for the Mavs.
